Check compatibility

The magnetic door latch looks like a good replacement if your existing lock supports the square shaped hole. In my case, all my locks have a larger D shape, necessitating a new door lock. No instructions are available in the box, but it seems be self explanatory if you are handy. The magnet has good strength in proximity, which ensures good fit and durability. The strike plate is hidden for a clean look. There is little bit of a adjustment available, but not much. Overall, its good value for the price. It helped me with a door that doesn't latch well due to frame settling.

Make sure you have a square spindle

The spindle is the part of the door latch that the handle turns and gets inserted into the tube. All of the doors (schlage) in my house use half-moon shaped spindles; you need a square spindle that is between 1/2 and 5/8 inch on a side. This latching mechanism is really interesting because instead of having the latch always extended, you have the latch stay inside the tube until it is pulled out by the magnet in the strike plate. Here are some more thoughts:
* Installation is mostly straight-forward; but you need to make sure the strike plate lines up with the latch. In my case, those lined up with almost no effort. However, the face of the mega handles latch is square; while the face of the schlage is rounded - so some wood carving is necessary to get those corners to fit.
* The big advantage of this over the non-magnetic latches is that the latch is in the door when it is open - instead of sticking out. So if you have a tight space where the latch gets in the while while it is open, this is for you!
* Keep in mind that the latch still comes out when the door is closed - I had thought it would just be magnetic force that is holding the door shut; but that is not the case. The latch physically moves into the face on the other side (pulled across by the magnet in the other side.)

If this works for you, it is a clever way to get a latch out of the way. I think it gives the door a nicer look when the door is open. The door still makes a latching sound when it closes. I suspect this will last a good long time - probably longer than a non-magnetic latch.

It works to keep a loose door shut

I had never seen a magnetized latch and I could immediately see why this would be a great thing if you have a door that’s jiggly or loose.

This looks to be an industrial type latch, my only negative is that the plates around it are a bit small. This would be better used for an interior door just based on its size. It’s also meant to be used, I think, for a deadbolt because of the flat face plate.

The first area of concern was if my door knob would fit through it. Yes! Luckily it has a square hole and my door center pin fit through perfectly. The part that is magnetized seems to be one or two mesh type magnet material inside. It sticks the latch together very firmly. I couldn’t pull them apart with just one hand, but it does easily open and close. If this is a problem at your house with the door that doesn’t want to stay shut I think it would work perfectly.

Exactly like the picture and description.

Super easy to install and it fit my modern door knob as well. Definitely works as it says it closes so smoothly and quietly. The magnetic latch work instantly too. Totally what I needed fory door.

Sleek looking, but make sure it's compatible

As some others have stated, there are a few stars that need to align in order for this to work with your existing setup: the latch and the catch need to line up on the door and wall and the knob needs to have a square spindle that connects the two knobs. Fortunately for me, both of those boxes were checked and it installed super quick. The thing that took the longest was screwing the knobs back together.

I do find that I have to close the door a little firmer than I did before to make sure it latches; I think my alignment was off just a smidge. Once it is latched it holds strong through. The latch also only opens when the knob is turned clockwise, opposed to either direction with a standard latch.

Another thing that wasn't a problem for me, but I noticed was different from the latch I replaced was that with a standard latch assembly you can adjust the distance between the spindle hole and the latch plate, but with this unit you only have one distance (2 3/8" or 60mm).

The doors have to vertically line up in order to work **sigh**

This magnetic door latch would work perfectly... if my stupid doors were actually vertically aligned. I have a lot of double closet doors that never had all the appropriate hardware installed so the doors keep popping open so I wanted to try this product.

This works by replacing the traditional door latch innards with this door latch and putting the magnet on the frame (or in my case on the opposite door). When closed, the door latch pops out slightly (approximately 1/4") and attaches itself to the magnet keeping the door closed. It doesn't require a lot of effort to break the magnet connection so it is easy to open. This is a genius product.

Unfortunately it turns out my double doors aren't vertically aligned -- the right door is about 1/8" higher than the left. So the latch doesn't engage the magnet completely. Obviously this is not the seller's fault. I will fix this by chiseling out the plate area to move the plate down, but haven't yet.

Best Used With Door Handles

This is a quite innovative door latch. It uses a magnetic latch bolt instead of a standard latch bolt with the springs.
This latch only works if you have a have a square shaped spindle on the door knob. It does not work with half moon shaped spindles.
It is a tight fit for preexisting door knob holes. This works better if you have a door handle. Due to the tight fit it will only allow you to turn the door knob only one way to open it. That is why this type of latch bolt works best for door handles instead.
Once installed you can lock your door normally.

Strong Magnet

Color is nice, matte gold, along with color matching screws. Magnetic is strong and holds the door shut with no issues. Fairly easy to install. You do have to take the door know off to install.

Not “Suitable for Every Door Handle & Knob Brand”

The concept of this Magnetic Tubular Door Latch (Satin Brass) from Mega Handles is what prompted me to order it. While it is made well, this replacement latch would not fit any of my Schlage or Kwikset passage door handles. As shown in my screenshot, the seller’s web page claims that it is “Suitable for Every Door Handle & Knob Brand” which it is not. If you have a door handle that this latch fits, it is really for new construction or you will have to replace the wood that was removed to fit the ramped surface from the standard latch plate. In addition, the hole diameter in the door for the old latch mechanism would have to be increased slightly to fit the barrel of this new latch mechanism because it is larger than the latches that I have installed. Luckily, I did not have to do this since I realized the new latch would not work for me.

I am disappointed that this latch did not work for two major brands of door handles.

Stainless exposed parts, well made, functions very well, strong magnetic action!

Well made magnetic latch, stainless outer parts, alloy internal parts, strong magnetic, works very well! Simple effective design, using to assure gates latch and don’t hang on the latch as spring loaded types often do when the gate is closed slowly.

Saved my sanity

I was being driven crazy by someone who constantly was slamming doors and waking me up. I found out that they weren't really slamming the door, they were just closing it without turning the knob and the spring in the regular door latch was making the loud noise. I got this out of desperation and forced it onto the doors. It didn't quite fit because all our door cutouts are rounded corners and these are square. Also, if you have round doorknobs, this only allows turning the knob one direction. However, I don't care. Now when the door is closed without the knob being turned, it just makes a nice quiet click and doesn't wake me up. Whoever invented this, thank you!

Nice latch but beware of square spindel.

This is a nice door latch but requires the use of a square spindle. Also you may need to chisel out your door for the square plate.

Robust Latch That Improves Security

I ordered a new entry door lock set due to some security concerns in my neighborhood, and this latch seemed like a good addition for a little extra peace of mind. The latch feels very well made and works exactly as intended.

Fortunately, the lock I purchased uses a square spindle, so this was compatible and installed without issues. It gives me more confidence that the door cannot be easily forced or jimmied open. Overall, a solid and sturdy upgrade if your setup uses a square spindle.

Finally, the bolt on the door to my room doesn't snag me when I go through.

The door to my bedroom/sitting room won't quite open a full 90°,so if I'm in a hurry, or carrying something that blocks my view, I virtually always snag my shirt or jacket, or worse yet my arm (where on one occasion it tore a big bleeding gouge in my flesh, which produced much cursing, but fortunately no damage that required more that some gauze and ointment) , on the protruding bolt. This worked perfectly for me and completely cured my problem! Now there is nothing protruding from the edge of the door, and even if I brush it in the way through it just slides right by without snagging me. I found this to be of about average installation effort, but I did work for years as a handy man. I had a knob laying around that had the square knob shaft, but no latch, so that worked out well, lol. You DO need to make sure your knobs connect with a square interface, not round or half moon unless you are very handy with a moto tool. Since I was there I also replaced the wood holding the latch plate since it had been busted from being broken before I owned the house, so I had to drill and install the latch plate from scratch and therefore obviously had no alignment issues. The latch looks great, mine was satin black, the finish is flawless, and it is for all practical purposes completely silent. It looks like it should last virtually forever, there is not much in the way of mechanism in this unit, and good heavy gauge metal construction, so since no force is applied to it in any way it should pretty much never break, the worst that can happen is it could get dirty and sticky if never cleaned. I think this is a really huge upgrade, and at the price it will be a no brainer for me on any door lock not needing external security in the future.

Read descriptions

Make sure to read description when choosing multiples. I chose a two pack but when doing so it changed from square to round. In short was cheaper to order two single squared.

The Perfect Modern Door Upgrade

I recently swapped my old hardware for this and the difference is night and day. If you’re looking for a cleaner, quieter, and more modern feel for your home, this is an absolute game-changer. The first thing you notice is how much smoother the door opening feels. Because the latch is magnetic, the bolt stays flush with the door while it’s open, eliminating that unsightly metal tongue. It only clicks into place when the door is closed, making the functionality nearly silent and incredibly satisfying to use. It gives the entire room a high end custom feel.
The Satin Brass finish looks stunning. Installation was a breeze since it’s a standard replacement for a square spindle, and the ease of adjustment on the strike plate allowed me to get a perfect fit in minutes.
At just $11.99, the value for the price is unbeatable. It’s a small investment that makes a massive impact on both the look and daily ease of use of your doors. Just keep in mind that this is specifically for square spindles, so double check your handles before ordering!

magnetic

this door latch is cool. It is magnetic and adds a bit of security to the lock. It functions well and does what it is supposed to do. I like it.
